Water Confidence and Safety for Babies - STARFISH Awards

The STARFISH awards are specially designed for babies as young as a few months old, along with their adult guardians. These awards focus on building water confidence and introducing essential safety skills to the little ones. The sessions take place in shallow water, with the guardian providing constant support and holding the baby throughout the class. Buoyancy aids may be used, but they are not necessary as the guardian ensures the baby's safety and comfort at all times.

First Steps Series - STAnley Awards for Children 3 Years and Above

If your child is 3 years old or older, the STAnley First Steps Series is an excellent choice. This series offers seven progressive awards that teach fundamental swimming and water safety skills. Children can participate with or without an accompanying adult. The program creates a safe and enjoyable environment for children to learn and follows a challenging yet rewarding learn-to-swim approach.

Octopus Series - Confidence and Skills for 4 to 8-Year-Olds

For older children, between the ages of 4 and 8, the Octopus series is tailored to enhance their confidence, knowledge, and skills in the water. With three progressive awards, this series allows children to access the Learn to Swim pathway, making them more comfortable while learning to swim.

Common Skills learnt at each Octopus stage:

Octopus 1 - Face in water
Octopus 2 - 2 to 3m unaided swimming 
Octopus 3 - Introduce breaststroke and 5m unaided swimming

Goldfish Series - Advancing Swimming Skills

Children who have completed either the STAnley First Steps Series or the Octopus Series can progress to the Goldfish series. This series consists of three progressive awards and focuses on swimming without aid for 15 meters to 25m legal strokes and performing floats.

Common Skills learnt at each Goldfish stage:

Goldfish 1 - Introduce front crawl breathing, all leg kicks and 10m swimming 
Goldfish 2 - Introduce breaststroke and Butterfly full stroke and 15m - 25m swimming 
Goldfish 3 - Master breaststroke and sink push and glides and 25m swimming 

Angelfish Series - Mastering Advanced Swimming Techniques

After completing the Goldfish Series, swimmers can advance to the Angelfish Series. This series includes three progressive awards and empowers swimmers to achieve a distance of 25m to 50m legal strokes, perform the butterfly stroke, and master sculling techniques along with water safety skills

Common Skills learnt at each Angelfish stage:

Angelfish 1 - Develop butterfly - 25m to 50m swimming
Angelfish 2 - Master all starts and turns, with 50m swimming 
Angelfish 3 - Master buttefly and all water safety skills 

Shark Series - Becoming a Proficient Swimmer

The Shark Series is the final stage of the swimmer's journey, consisting of three progressive awards. Learners in this series gain proficiency in basic water rescue and survival techniques, as well as starts and turns for each of the strokes. Completing this series enables swimmers to confidently swim a distance of 100 to 200 meters.
